Monday Monday

That was one of my favourite Mamas and Papas songs of the sixties . Now only Michelle Phillips is left from the original group with the passing of Denny Doherty . All those songs take me back to a simpler more innocent time in my life . Who could forget *words of love so soft and tender * , *dream a little dream of me *, *dedicated to the one I love * or the paraody of themselves *creeque alley * ....The time I grew up in was a unique musical era of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones , Sonny and Cher , Simon and Garfunkel , and Mama Cass Elliot , whose voice was the cornerstone of that band . Denny was a guy from the Martimes who became a part of one of America's greatest folk rock bands of that generation . I have their greatest hits cd and can go California Dreaming anytime I want . Music is forever .

Don't forget "Dedicated to the One I Love".

From my perspective, The Mamas and the Papas were almost under the radar, but it's times like these that you realize how much a part of your past their music really is.

Heck, I remember seeing them on The Ed Sullivan Show. For the youngsters lurking here, that was the Sunday night TV show that also showcased people such as Elvis Presley -- but only above the waist -- and the Beatles, which is the British band that Paul McCartney was in before Wings.

I met Denny Doherty, and he did my show back when I was hosting a talk radio morning show. He and I were both born in one of the most beautiful cities in the world (but a secret kept from many),
Halifax. He was 'back home' visiting (and doing some work on Theodore Tugboat) at the time. He had a lot to say about the heady days of The Mamas and The Papas, the drugs, and the many forgotten and/or broken things along the way due to substance abuse. He had his head on straight, but still had that look in his eye that said, "if we get out on the town tonight, there WILL be trouble..."
He was a fascinating guy, and a huge important part of that group. California Dreamin' is the kind of song that, for me at least, STILL takes you back to when you first heard it. Amazing music.
